Day-by-Day Itinerary: 8 day tour from Tangier
Tangier to the Blue City of Chefchaouen
Your adventure begins in Tangier, the historic gateway where Europe meets Africa. After a warm welcome, we leave the coast behind and drive up into the lush, green Rif Mountains toward Chefchaouen. Known as the “Blue Pearl,” this peaceful town is famous for its striking blue-and-white buildings. You will have the afternoon to stroll through the calm medina, snap beautiful photos of the colorful doorways, and enjoy a relaxed evening in a local riad.
Roman Ruins and the Imperial City of Fes
After breakfast, we depart the mountains and travel south to Volubilis. Here, you will explore ancient Roman ruins featuring magnificent, well-preserved mosaic floors and towering pillars. Next, we make a short stop in the imperial city of Meknes to admire the grand Bab Mansour gate. By late afternoon, we arrive in Fes, the cultural and spiritual heart of Morocco, where you will spend the night.
Guided Tour of the Fes Medina
Today is completely dedicated to discovering Fes. A knowledgeable local guide will lead you through the maze-like alleys of the UNESCO-listed medina. You will feel like you have traveled back in time as you visit the famous vibrant leather tanneries, the stunning Bou Inania Madrasa, and Al-Qarawiyyin, known as the oldest continuously operating university in the world. Enjoy the scents of the spice markets and the sounds of craftsmen before returning to your riad for the evening.
Cedar Forests to the Sahara Desert
We start our long, scenic drive south by passing through Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland” for its alpine architecture. We will stop in the beautiful cedar forests of Azrou to watch wild Barbary monkeys playing in the trees. The landscape slowly changes from green mountains to the spectacular, palm-filled Ziz Valley.
In the late afternoon, we reach the Merzouga desert. You will mount a camel for a sunset trek across the golden dunes, arriving at a traditional Berber camp. After dinner, gather around the fire to enjoy authentic Ahidous drum music—traditionally played in two straight lines, one for men and one for women—under a blanket of stars.
Desert Sunrises and the Todra Gorges
Wake up early to witness a breathtaking Sahara sunrise, a quiet moment you will never forget. After breakfast, we leave the dunes and travel to the traditional market town of Rissani. Later, we drive into the spectacular Dades Valley to enjoy dinner and spend the night surrounded by unique rock formations.
Kasbahs and the Road to Marrakech
After breakfast, we will travel along the famous ‘Road of a Thousand Kasbahs’, passing through the fragrant Valley of Roses. Our next major stop is Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert, before we arrive at the iconic Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou. This enormous, fortified, clay-built village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has featured in films such as Gladiator. Afterwards, we begin our winding drive over the majestic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi N’Tichka pass, arriving in Marrakech in the late afternoon.
